Description:This is a pivotal role for our client. Design is instrumental for their product. Their designers are involved at every step of a project—from gathering insights, brainstorming, prototyping, and experimentation to launching. We are seeking a Design Director who is a brilliant problem solver, quick study, self-starter, and excellent communicator with a passion for great design and the ability to achieve it within commercial building applications. By constantly focusing on the customer, you will create products that are not only beautiful but also beneficial for the spaces where they are used. This position inspires the design team and shepherds the process from creative concept development through design execution. The Design Director is a strategic thinker and creative leader that embodies design leadership by inspiring great spaces. The ideal candidate will have experience designing for commercial verticals such as hospitality, retail, education, office or healthcare for a design centric category such as tile, wallpaper, fabric, countertop surfaces or flooring. A strong connection with the A&D community and end customers is key. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Partner with key stakeholders to create strategically aligned and executable design roadmaps • Create and maintain design leadership in each segment of our global business, working closely with customers and key specifiers to define design requirements • Build strong relationships with key internal partners on design strategies and priorities • Interface directly with customers, consumers and specifiers to identify, define and deliver new design concepts • Assess and grow design talent capability and resources, building a strong and cohesive team • Conduct Design Boards, Councils, formal and informal market research • Partner with key internal stakeholders (e.g., product management, marketing, product development, sales and manufacturing) to ensure team is creating industry-leading, high-impact visuals • Drive functional excellence in design by establishing effective new design practices and metrics • Provide technical and functional leadership to design team members to support the effective execution of design projects in alignment with business needs, technical requirements, budget and timeline • Develop and share best practices to drive ongoing improvement • Manager a team of 6-7 designers with varying levels of experience. Year 1 success measures: • Own the creation of strategically aligned and executable design roadmaps • Demonstrate business acumen by understanding the fundamentals of our products and market channels • Successfully execute priority design projects in alignment with business needs • Establish personal credibility with key customers and internal partners from both a design and leadership perspective • Develop an effective and cohesive organization, including a strong bench and comprehensive talent assessment and succession plan TRAVEL: • Approximately 20% with travel to customer and supplier sites, trade exhibitions and our manufacturing plants.
Requirements:REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • BA / BS degree in design, fine arts, interior design, or equivalent degree • 7-10 years of product design in building products, or similar industry • 5+ years of experience leading and developing creative teams KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: • Experience creating a design strategy based on an understanding of market drivers, trends, competitive landscape, and emerging opportunities • Brings a high level of design standards, practices, and aesthetics to design projects • Ability to effectively lead and inspire teams • Demonstrated ability to build a high performing team, retain and develop high potential talent • Strong sense of ownership, accountability and responsibility with a bias for action • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present and communicate design concepts and strategy to a wide audience • Capable of functioning in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities • Results driven, resourceful and willing to “roll up the sleeves” • Strong commitment to customer satisfaction • Unquestioned ethics, integrity and credibility
